The Andy Wasserman "Hummingbird" 
Special Order Cortobass

Well see, it all started when Andy called from NJ and wanted
a Cortobass. I had a piece of Cherry that had been following
me around for years, and it felt right to build it into this bass.

 
Then I asked if there was some small symbol I could burn into
it, something of meaning. Andy said a hummingbird. Cool, I 
myself have a kinship with the winged world so off we went.

And went...



And went...


A vine circles the upper horn, both appearing out of and
disappearing into natural dark streaks in the wood grain.
The hummingbird is sipping from the nectar of sound...


The vine branches off into a quote from John Coltrane around
the outer edge of the body. "My music is the spiritual expression
of what I am... my faith, my knowledge, my being..."  and
continues until it joins into the vine as a branch on the other side.

Along the way,  the Turquoise inlayed  Ebony knobs, flame  Maple pickguard,  Hipshot extender key,  and super-punchy  DiMarzio bridge  pickup were added...  and as if that wasn't enough...

additional woodburning on the headstock and the chakras
up the back of the neck, inlayed with semi-precious stones set
in crushed turquoise finished it off nicely.



We had no idea it would go this far. Andy flew in, fell in love with
the bass, and stayed for a couple of days before we had to give
him back to his life as a concert pianist, music educator, and
writer of advanced music theory texts... what a cool cat!



I didn't take notes or collect quotes...
but I think this picture speaks volumes.
