"When I ordered it I kind of  dismissed the importance of the ergonomic advantages of the Cortobass.  I was wrong.  It plays & sounds great, but I was amazed at the difference the weight & improved balance made.  Just the feel of the bass is so much better than what I'm used to is amazing.  And, of course, it's lovely to look at.
Thanks so much for a beautiful instrument and for your patience with my questions and changes."

One-off Mahogany body

This one was sold to a gentleman in North Carolina who had this to say:

"What can I say but WOW!  This bass is wonderful.  The tone, fit and finish, playability, unbelievable.  It is far more than I expected.  I have had it for just about 3 hours now and have been having a ball here at work with it. I will surely be ordering at least one more and maybe two.  Need a fretless next. Thanks for your attention to detail. It is a pleasure to work with true artists."

It later wound up with Ben in
GEORGIA who had this to say:

"LOVE the sound and with a very high output pickup, my toes just curl when I play this!! You can get any sound you want with this baby! I have several Birdsongs and each have their own personalities....but this one is wild and loves to scream..."

"My Cortobass, 6C-048, arrived yesterday evening. I don't know where to start. I couldn't be more satisfied with this purchase. The packaging was excellent. The hard shell case is very nice. But, the bass is outstanding! The finish and the workmanship are unmatched. The SOUND is absolutely incredible. Using the bridge pick-up and the varitone in the first position (bypass), I smile every time I go to the E string. I've never heard, or imagined, that an electric bass could sound like this. It's hard to describe it also. Sort of like a grand piano type of sound. This is clearly the most impressive "string instrument" I've ever touched. I'll get back to with more feedback, but for now I just want to go play it."
And 4 months later: "I am a very satisfied and very happy customer of yours. I continue to be amazed by this bass's sound and playability."
Thank You!

"BLESS YOU ! BLESS YOU! BLESS YOU ! thank you for making such fine instruments( I 'm refering to both the  the anniversary basses which i received yesterday)#49-erin and #50 jacob. they both were package professionally(as usual-these were my 3rd and 4th birdsongs to date)  i had to first  sit and admire the beauty of these basses for several minutes. the natural beauty and feel of both anniversary basses were like a breath of fresh air....and then upon picking up and playing ,it got better and better...the feel and sounds i got, did not let me put them down till 4AM..I actually fell asleep in the bass room and was up again at 9AM reaching for both basses again. Both bassses are fantastic and each have their own distinct personalities. these are heirlooms that will be passed down to my children and I know they will be appreciated. Visiting your shop and meeting Scott,Jamie and Wyatt re-enforced that people that really love and enjoy what they are doing can create a truely outstanding  and fantastic instrument. As you can tell, I love and enjoy your basses and you know that because we allready have more in the works !!  KEEP IT UP !!!"

"I am at a loss for words. This is so much more than I expected. I thought that it would take me a few days to get used to my new bass but it felt so perfect from the first time that I picked it up. I received it late friday afternoon and we jammed on friday night. I could have played all night. The finishing and fine details that you put into your work is like none that I have ever seen.

One very happy customer ,

Well I've been bonding with my bass for a week now and have clocked up 18 hours of playing. Thanks. It's a beautiful instrument. I've shown it to four guitarists / bass players and all four reckon it's the best bass they've ever played. The wife of one is trying to persuade him to sell his fender deluxe (36 inch scale!) and order a Birdsong. The balance is perfect - the guitar was just balanced perfectly on my right leg. The neck is fantastic. I was a bit worried about the long scale length (I've been playing a 30 inch Fender acoustic), but the extra inch doesn't pose any problems. The narrower neck is the most obvious bonus, but I suspect even more important is the shaping of the back of the neck. This took me by surprise as many basses I've played have a flatter back, but the shaped back is so comfortable, playing is really easy. Over the last few weeks I've been getting some pain in the rear knuckle of my left hand index finger, particularly after several hours playing. This has been eased greatly when playing the Birdsong, so I suspect my fingers are in a more natural position with your bass. I will probably still have to seek some medial advice regarding my finger, but in the meantime I'll be playing the birdsong and leaving my fender on the wall.

As for sound, what can I say that hasn't be said before? Nothing, but I'll say it anyway. Even without the varitone control, I can get a huge range of sounds with the two pickups. Adding the varitone makes a vast palette of sounds available. Even more impressive for me is the responsiveness of the strings combined with the guitar's incredible sustain (particularly at the high end). Playing just below the neck pickup gives a more measured punchier sound and playing near the bridge gives a great compressed sound. The guitar really picks up these differences. The resonance is superb, particularly noticeable at the high end. I don't know if it's the wood on my guitar, but I can often feel the body of the guitar resonating through the upper horn onto my chest. Somehow I don't think I'll ever need an effects pedal. Thanks for saving me some money!

"I Just got my Bass!!! The look and feel far surpasses my expectations which were already pretty high.  I know you guys hear that a lot, but it is true.  Smaller and lighter than I had expected. Cool.  It's just what I was looking for. Tomorrow I'm a gonna try out a GK 700RB head.  Should be fun."

Lucinda has arrived!  She is absolutely wonderful to hold, play, hear, I love her.  She is so different to play than my big clunker that it’s really surreal frankly.  I’m finding that patterns that we very hard to pull off on my clunker just flow on Lucinda.  Amazing. I love the bass, I showed it off at the local guitar shop and they all were blown away by the sound, the impeccable attention to detail, and the playability.  You guys reinvented the bass rather than taking the Strat design and making it a bass.  I love playing the bass and everything about it.  I wouldn’t change a thing.

Awesome Bass.  I feel like I have found my match.  The neck is superb in every regard and is the heart for the bass for me. Playing this bass frees up something in me that no other bass has ever done, I feel like I have finally achieved access to my full potential. This bass plays me....the neck is like silken heaven. The electronics are extremely well matched and provide surprising tonal clarity and shaping. The Varitone is da BOMB.  I have already found my sweet spot with the V-tone but every position is unique enough to have its own value (my mind actually started placing varitone assignments to our repertoire after about three songs during practice last night, I fell that easily into synch with the bass).  I especially look forward to playing in a larger venue with this tonal flexibility.
(A little while later:) I am currently falling in love with my Cortobass and will get to the writing a review probably this weekend.  Scott really had his ducks lined up when he designed this bass.  It fits me like a tailor made glove, a very beautiful Birdseye Maple glove with a short scale neck  ;~)
 Thanks again,
Kevin  :^)

Just got back from a sesh where I tried Fruity McBass the red cedar corto out and he certainly does the trick:D Our guitarist was especially impressed the the extender key on the E string, and I couldn't believe how comfortable it was to play him through even the awkward bits of the set. Man I love your basses.

"I have been playing the little guy a whole lot. It looks and plays every bit as beautiful as I thought it would. I am very happy. Tonight is its innaugural performance. The people in my band and friends have all been anticipating its arrival; I'm sure they won't be disappointed."  Then... "Yes, the inaugural performance went very well. Everybody remarked how beautiful the bass was. The drummer loves it as much as me because it cuts through better than the Rickenbacker. The varitone offers a lot of nice possibilities."

I am just floored by how great of a bass C-63 is.  I am absolutely in love with her.  I haven’t figured out what I am going to do with my Rickenbackers yet (I own two of them), in fact last night I actually picked one of them up and played on it for about a minute and hung it back on the wall (it was the first time I had played anything but the Birdsong since I received it).  The Rics don’t fit me anymore since I have gotten my Birdsong.  Thank you!

2-pickup rear rout Poplar

I am writing to officially tell you that I am delighted with my little poplar bass. Throughout my very busy holiday season, it has been calling to me regularly from the music room. I can practice for hours at a time without my hands or shoulder hurting, and I am realizing that the whole technique of playing bass can be as subtle as singing is for me (I am primarily a voice teacher and professional singer). I'm always telling my students "there's always more to do less of" and I realize that with this bass, playing it truly requires less effort than I could have ever imagined. On the other hand, I am startled by the volume when I slap it! I am just starting to get to know the varitone settings and the different pickup personalities. Balance is perfect- amazing that I can let go of my left hand and nothing drops! The look and feel of the wood is also really nice- so much more classy than my old red thing. I have taken it twice to my band rehearsals, and I can barely pry it out of their hands when my guys try it. One of them has been checking out your website... No wonder you guys always look so happy in your pictures! If you make everyone who orders as happy as I am, then you must feel tremendous pride and satisfaction.

With Christmas and family functions I've not been able to spend as
much time with Wally as I would like, but so far I absolutely love the
bass. The tone is better than any regular scale I've ever owned. The
weight and balance are unbelievable. My only issue is with the shape
of the back of the neck. The "V" shape is causing some adjustment.

Thanks for all your hard work!

Hi Jamie, Scott and crew!! This bass is more than I ever expected! Imagine my excitement when it arrived just 3 days after you shipped it - right before x-mas. You packaged it soooo careful with nothing left undone. And then there is was. Beautiful wood with a subtle fragrance of oil. Meticulous craftsmanship throughout. No detail missed - or shortcut taken. You know that I had my worries about how the bass would hang on my body. The Birdsong just fits!!! Complete balance - no diving neck (just like you said Scott), no chest poking knob or chest-restricting awkwardness - AND light weight! And then - the sound! WOW. I haven't even figured all the possibilities. That will be mucho fun for a long, long time. The neck is great - my fingers and wrist don't tire as before. The bass looks so handsome and gives off so many good vibes. I just can't get over it. Thank you all sooo much.

The eagle has landed, and she is beautiful.  You didn't tell me that this bass plays itself. This may be the best design innovation since Leo Fender was in the business. I have rehearsal tomorrow, and will provide the band review soon. Oh yea, #9 arrived in-tune, unbelievable!

First and foremost it has been a pleasure dealing with the two of you.  You two transmit loads of positive energy and it shows in the end product.

My instrument is more than I could have asked for.  When I first contacted Scott back in August '06 I had a very special request.  I wanted a four string bass to play my chord melody arrangements on that would speak clearly.  I play some very tight 3 and 4 note voicings and I did not want a harmonic pile of mud.  I think "we" got it right.  The combination of the maple body and single p/u, parallel wiring configuration is as close to perfection as one could get.  A GMaj triad from the 3rd fret (low to high GDGB) is crystal clear.  This is the opening chord I play on my arrangement of Pat Metheny's "Farmers Trust" and I hope to have a recording for you all soon as this tune makes me think of you all.  No, I don't think of you all as farmers, it's just a really nice simple melody based over some really cool changes for some very cool people who aren't just into themselves.
Anyhow, what the hell am I going to do with all my other basses?

  CORTOFUSION OWNER COMMENTS

6F-001P
2 piece Walnut (This one is a prototype that has a different pickup
and control plate than the standard, like #2 below, ended up with)

In mid-1999, I had had a dream of the kind of “ultimate bass” that I would want - I also recognized that it was out of my reach for many reasons.  So I watered down the idea to something feasible, right up until I got into serious discussions with Scott and the CortoFusion prototype idea was born.  The ‘fusion meets and exceeds even the original dream I had 7 years ago.  The sound is not only exactly what I wanted; it’s also perfect for my current music-playing environment.  The pickup choice and varitone keeps it from being the “one trick pony” (although admittedly I would have been fine with that as long as it was MY “one trick”).  When Scott told me “something weird happened with the last setting”, I was intrigued - I didn’t expect it to simulate a mild overdrive. It is easily the most playable, warmest, most badass instrument I've laid hands on.
