I have very entertaining dreams. An odd brain in an unusual life can come up with the strangest things, and music is usually involved. This morning’s ended with a portly Chinese man in wear one can only describe as part Elvis and part KISS (think Jackie Chan plus 50 pounds, slicked hair and sequins in boots borrowed from Gene Simmons) playing a surf tune called “Land Pound” on a Les Paul. Oh, his whole area of the scene was in black and white too. But that’s just how it ended. The lead-in to this moment was me, fellow luthier Brady Muckelroy, and an unidentified third guy (It might have been you Andrew, come to think about it) having a conversation, you know - just hanging out living-room like (only by an end aisle in an Ace hardware store) talking about the healing properties of music.
I said, “Music’s everything. If music doesn’t help, you’re possessed. Music is divine.”
Very quickly while we all were nodding in agreement, someone said “Like Land Pound! Land Pound!” and we looked over and here’s this guy in black and white and he goes right into his hit song as if it’s an example of what we were talking about, like he’s on Top Of The Pops or something. There may have even been some canned applause.
Did I mention he looked like Jackie Chan as “Fat Elvis” and was in black and white?
Much of the time in my dreams I can control what I do and even realize it’s not quite normal. So all the while this is happening, in the back of my mind IN THE DREAM I’m going “This is some shit, right here.” Just like you’re doing out there right now.
I swear to you, I rarely even pop an aspirin. There were no drugs involved. Ok, maybe pizza and a little beer. But those are not opiates! Certainly nothing mind-altering. Maybe it was the pecan dust. Here are four examples of the variety of things going on around the workshop this past week. Among others…
A Sparrow of the wildest Texas pecan was routed, rounded, drilled out & contoured ready for sanding. This will go out to the UK.
A demo video of the new SD Curlee Phoenix was filmed.
Pickups were installed & wired into a “New Old Stock” Hy5 with the old-style body, an EADGC tuned 5-string bass that will be going to Japan.
A custom Hy5 with twin Delanos and a scroll horn is now sanded to 400 grit.
All that and more! Every week. Every day. And when it stops and I close my eyes, the entertainment continues. Also beginning to gear up for the annual 4th of July Birdsong Birthday bash! There’ll be sales & stuff. But don’t let that keep you from calling now if you’re ready – I’m not that guy where you order July 3rd and then it goes on sale the 4th. "Ha - ha!" Not here. We’re close enough now, I’ll be sure you’re similarly taken care of. BUT you won’t see the 12th Anniversary bass until the 4th. There’s only one, it’s gorgeous, and it ties in with another celebration happening. What? Where? How much? Uh-uh, not spilling the beans this year. Check in on the July 4th weekend update FRIDAY JULY 1st! I'll keep reminding you.
Meanwhile have a great week and we’ll talk again next Friday. Pleasant dreams!
