Palindromic date week – hey, 6/17/16 and the rest. The greatest palindrome – something the same forward as backwards – I know of is “A man, a plan, a canal – Panama.” That blew my mind as a kid. It was my Blue Cheer “Summertime Blues” of linguistics.
The first hundred degree day kicks my ass a little more every year, but every one after this will be conquered. It’s the one day I give myself to be surprised. I mean, I came here and it’s south-central Texas and it is summertime! Guess what? It’s GOING to be hot. HOT hot. Pavement melting hot. “Oh shit” hot. Hot! I do like to sweat, it’s part of the experience – I get to sweat in my own workshop. It means something. Sweat stains are badges of honor, like calluses on the hands and sawdust in places we don’t even want to think about. But I’m not gonna lie, Thursday was hot.
All week my thoughts have been with Florida. This week I worked a little harder to do my part to fill the world with good; it’s all most of us can do. We can’t fix the issues at hand, no matter how we simplify it down to a bumper sticker. Complex problems don’t get solved that way, and polarized people see these things as simple issues, and we all see the results of their simple solutions acted out. Sad times, crazy times. Any good I’ve done this week I did in remembrance of those innocent brothers and sisters killed; a little extra of whatever I have to offer has been offered, has happened out into the world because of their existence. It’s really the least one can do. I know we can all sit in a circle and make music together, I’ve seen it; but I have no magic plan to apply this to the world we’re in.
But you do your best with the gifts you have to share, and my magic is helping music into the world, so I do what I do. This weekend in addition to carving out some basses I’ll be offering my June “Album Of The Month” – Portrait. (http://www.sbeckwith.com/music-1) Mostly instrumental with a handful of songs, it’s an electric, eclectic journey recorded mostly from 2003 to 2007. Every artist should attempt a self-portrait, but I don’t paint canvas – I paint silence. So here it comes, an hour or so of silence sonically painted & shaded in layers I feel pretty good about. For ears that like the odd mix of old-school left-dial overnight radio, this mix of folk-electric-Eastern-psych could be a fun listen. It’s just music, people. It doesn’t need a label.
Had another strange music dream last night – I was a traveler staying in a beautiful motel and found myself in a small room partying with, among others, Kris Novoselic – then very young with a young band, Nirvana. Aside from most others in the room, I told him “I am actually here from twenty sixteen, and able to speak and move around in my dreams. I’m trying to figure out… do I have a moral obligation to tell you what’s going to happen?” He was totally understanding. “No.” So I asked if there was anything he’d like to know. “When are we going to break up?”
“Are you sure you want to know that, Kris?” He thought for a moment.
“No, don’t tell me; I don’t want to know.”
What would you do if someone from 25 years forward came to visit and asked you this? Would you want to know? Or would you just dance while the music is happening and not change everything and miss the ride because of some dark day in the future you won’t be able to dodge no matter how you live in fear of it? As an aside, I almost forgot my duffel bag and as I went back to get it I glanced in a mirror and was six feet tall with curly red hair; looking like Carrot Top was, to me, the only unusual part of the dream. The rest of it seemed so natural.
Getting ready for the big 4th of July weekend sale, celebrating Birdsong's 12th Anniversary and 40 years of SD Curlee instruments. Friday July 1st through Monday the 4th at midnight, BIG SALE on Birdsongs & SD Curlee basses in stock, in progress, or your order of your dream bass. I'll also be unveiling THE 12th Anniversary bass AND tossing some stuff from "the vault" up on the inventory. Fun!
For now, please check out the music I already have up at http://noisetrade.com/scottbeckwith, the projects on the builds page, the instruments on the inventory page. (Don't feel you have to wait either - I'll deal on 'em now since we're so close). Hey, go make something harmonious happen! If I can do this much, anyone can do a good bit too. Sing your song to the world; it may not be a quick fix for everything, but it might inspire a few more good seeds to take root. And that can only help.
Listening to: Much cool stuff, including perhaps the greatest segue in history – Rev. Gary Davis into Kraftwerk into the Re-Whipped Herb Alpert remix CD.
