Nothing fancy - no effects or compression, no EQ. Just dry, flat analog recordings direct into a Tascam 488. In each sample, I play a few licks & runs with the selected pickup, then move through the notches of the varitone

This is our standard 2-pickup Cortobass. The wood acts more as a seasoning for the tone - this will give you a basic idea of the Cortobass personality though. Remember, this is a passive instrument - no active electronics.

How sweet it is!

Here's what a Cortobass sounds like in the hands of a truly inspired player... this was his first time playing one. These samples are taken from longer pieces on the .

Visit him at www.bradymuckelroy.com - he has a new live CD out with DVD video that has to be seen to be believed... a gifted player and a great person.

Birdsong Tonal Experiments!

We think outside the box. A pickup doesn't know where
or how it's "supposed" to be installed - it just does what
it does where & how you put it in. If it sounds good, it's
valid. End of story. "Bridge" pickups by the neck, you
name it, anything goes when you're not "painting by
numbers" to match a "Strat" or "Les Paul" tone.
If it fits, try it.
You just might find your own voice!

Here's one I've been working on. A cool in-between
for those who want more power than a single, but not
your typical humbucker bridge tone. I go for something
"BIG AND BRIGHT", and here's what I like a lot...

Here is what a DiMarzio X2N sounds like in the bridge
position of a Mahogany-bodied bolt-on neck 24" scale
guitar... but wired PARALLEL for clarity instead of in
SERIES for, like, I dunno... death metal? It's way too
hot for anything else. But wired parallel, it thinks it's a
really powerful single coil, like a P90. Still humbucking,
though, and nobody's going to be able to figure out where
that BIG TWANG is coming from!

The amp is a Tech 21 Trademark 60 1x12 combo. It's
solid state, so the cleans could be warmer... but that's it.
It was recorded to CD via an old Tascam 488 multitrack
unit and posted with no EQ tweaks or compression.

SAMPLE 1: Clean & bright

SAMPLE 2: Dirty - a bit of gain (note the clarity, where you can hear every note in the chord ringing...)

SAMPLE 3: Dirty with a "tone switch" engaged for a nice midrange spike, like a halfway pushed wah pedal.

SAMPLE 4: Hard Rock - lots of gain, still clear!
